Richmond Talks

Hey Kirby,

Just wanted to let you know that Radio isn't going to be the same without you. I was so sorry to hear about the cutbacks...yeah...that's the Clear Channel way...I know you will be with someone else before you know it. Just wanted you to know you're in my thoughts and prayers and I know you will be fine...I'll just miss hearing you on the air.

Your Buddy,

Linda Shu

Amen....when we worked together I don't think I could have been doing anything that I loved anymore. I have met a lot of very special people and you're right at the top of that list, and have been fortunate to have kept in touch with the most special of the bunch. I think Phil was on to something. I really missed everyone when I first left but like I said I have tried very hard to keep in touch with the ones that I cared the most about. I feel so bad for you guys...I know Colette must have been crushed. I don't know her phone number but if you see or talk to her please give her my best...and Carol Dean...what  a shame...But that's the Clear Channel way...I'm not sorry to be gone and my wish is that you will feel the same. Please keep in touch...you know maybe this happened for a reason...maybe it's time that you pursue that gift you have for photography.??? Take care and keep in touch. You're the BEST.

DAMN,they are going to REGRET that move.I think they will regret it very much--JE.

Kirby, I am so sorry to hear about the misfortunate at CC.  You are a survivor and will find what you are looking for.  Paul told me and then Phil and I also talked about it this morning.

Hang in there.  You are the best.

Kirby,
Your long career in Richmond radio earned you more than a curt dismissal. And no, I hadn't heard, unless it's in this morning's paper which I haven't seen.
You've brought more joy to literally millions of people over the years than Ruth ever has or will. Carol Deane, I'm sure, feels ill-used as do Collette and Jim.
You may be a bit more philosphical but getting fired is never fun even if you understand it. There's no reason given in her short memo. What's going on? Do they dislike you? Are you being replaced with another person? Are you being replaced with a computer?
There are so many better ways to let long-time employees go without humiliating them.
You can console yourself that your name already lives large in Richmond and will be remembered long after many have been forgotten.

Sorry to read the news in VARTV that Q94 let you go. I'm not in radio but that is one reason I've never pursued my interest there.  I've just always found it interesting. I've always admired what I've seen and read about you but haven't actually listened to you on the air since your WENZ/WANT days. Q94 has never been my style of radio and I try to use my overnights for sleep! I've got XM now which might be good place for your voice. If I'm not in my own vehicle listening to XM everybody else's radio seems to be on 98.9 Liberty for music (they could use your voice too) or WRVA for news and info. Anyway my condolences about the job. Best wishes for the future!

you need it, ok?

What  happened??

You damn sure did give it a run.   Better than most.  You'll be fine.   Let me  know if I can help.

here's how i recall it. i went to xl102 in september of 1985. that was when
slam duncan was doin' all nights. so slam moved up, then u were overnight.
then, slam left for 94z/raleigh, and u did seven to midnight, right? hell, i
was outa town (KISS-FM,greensboro).

well, i reckon you are the grand champion of deejay longevity at Q94. like
babe ruth said after hittin sixty back in the day..to your 20 years and
eleven months i say..."let some S O B beat that!"

i don't have to tell u what a wonderful service you provided to countless
thousands of people you probably will never meet. i just know u know a
heckuva lot more people than i do, and dammit, we're all gonna miss you on
the air.

take care kirby, my best to Duce, too.

That's horrible news. I'm really sorry to hear that Kirby. What's next for you?

The end of an era!
JJ

What a shock but not a surprise given that Clear Channel is one of the most despised communication companies in the nation. It goes without  saying that I wish only the best for the old Kirb-side jock. Please stay in touch and if you ever get down this way you always have a place to stay., Any future plans?

Kirb,

Sorry to hear you reached the end of the line at Q.

Every time I attend the broadcasters' dinner, I get nostolgic about the "good ol' days", the fun I used to have, the people I used to work with. And every time I run into guys I used to work with who, like me, have left the business (Hemby, Lou, others) who remind me that there ARE no good ol' days in broadcasting any more. That between voice tracking and budget cuts, these big corporations have squeezed the life out of one of the best careers anyone could ever wish for.

The key word here being "career", because people were in it for the long run, Aaroe, Hudson, Floyd Henderson. Remember when people actually RETIRED from the business before they were either fired or forced out? Good people. Talented people. People like you.

Oh, I'm sure you'll land on your feet. You're too big a presence and personality in this town to do otherwise. Wishing you good luck isn't necessary. You simply need an opportunity, because given that opportunity, you'll always be a success in whatever endevour you set your sights on. and I predict it will be bigger and better. That's the Kirby Carmichael I've known all these years. Go get 'em.

Stay in touch,

Doug

Kirby,

You've always been a true gentleman, a consumate professional and a hell of a good guy.  I'm proud to say I worked beside you.  The world is a much poorer place without your warm voice to light the darkness.

It sounds as if there was a plan in place to make life difficult for you and have you make the first move away from Q.  Real men make decisions and act on them - cowards plan in secrecy and bedevil honest men's souls.  As hard as it is to believe, you are better for not being part of their evil.

I admire your positive vibes and the body of fabulous radio you provided our community.  You are a true communicator and Richmond's radio audience lost a great friend when you walked out the door.

Please know that I'm honestly honored to call you my friend.  Anything I can do for you, don't hesitate to ask.

Jeff

I am sorry to here the word, "Budget Cut", but take a lesson from my book, God has something better in store for you.  You are too talented and have too much going for you to be stopped by such foolishness.  God knew you were no longer happy so another window is opening.  Don't look at the closed door, find the open window

Love you much!!  This is experience talking

Kirby,

I am sorry to hear the news.  I left five years ago this past April so I really don't know of all the machinations that have gone on since but I can guess.  With all the baggage that comes with the job,  its got to be fun.  When its not.  Well, its time to find something else to do.  I would say you gave it your best....had a hell of a good run....and most important that you made a difference.  If you're like me, over time the good stuff will float to the top....The bad memories will seep away  and you'll remember the good times , the good people and what Tansey called, the good works. All the best, John Harding

Dear Kirby…

I’m trying to think kind thoughts, but the word “bastards” keeps coming to mind. These people who have taken over broadcasting are so absolutely clueless about the most basic elements of corporate governance. You don’t get rid of your most popular personalities – they are your link to the public – your BRAND.

I’m sorry Kirby, but they cannot take away from you all the talent and happiness you brought to so many people for so many years. The person who did this will be forgotten – you will not. I’ve seen this happen to so many people. Jack Alix told me how you were one of the first people to welcome him to CC even though you would probably never see each other in the halls. That was so YOU and Jack was very touched by it.

You will land on your feet. You’re too talented not to. Keep faith and don’t let the bastards get you down.

Best always,

Bill

I'm sorry to hear this news :-(   You have LONG been the sound of late night radio so I guess I shall find another station for late night listening just as I did when Betty left in the morning.

My friend. God bless you and your work will be sorely missed.  Ct

Heard the news....damn.  call me soon.

the party isn't over kirby. You're be back
